Just a second

Feel like 2008 just won't end?

It's no wonder — this year will be the longest since 1992, with both a leap day on Feb. 29 and a leap second added just after 6:59:59 p.m. and before 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 31.

The world started adding leap seconds in 1972, sometimes a couple times a year. This is first leap second since Dec. 31, 2005, and the fourth year to have both a leap day and leap second.

Quarantids meteor shower late Friday/early Saturday



If the clouds clear, those brave enough to bundle up and sit through 12 degree weather can be treated to a meteor shower with up to 100 "shooting stars" per hour. The shower peaks in the early morning hours of Saturday
